Ribble Weldite Pro Cycling has enjoyed a hugely successful start to 2022. Much of this early-season success can be attributed to the form of their flying Scotsman - Finn Crockett. We caught up with the Rutland-Melton International Cicle Classic winner to find out to garner his thoughts on the season so far.

If the season were to end now, you could reasonably argue that Finn has already more than repaid the faith shown in him by Ribble Weldtite when they signed him late in 2021. It was already clear that they were getting a rider of significant talent and proven race-winning pedigree. Taking the overall victory in the u23 category of the British Cycling Road Race Series was proof enough of this.

Numerous race victories and podium placings in 2022 have simply rubber-stamped his burgeoning potential. In fact, it would be true to say that Finn has rarely been out of contention at any race that he started this season. The main highlights of his season so far are:

• 1st - Scottish National Alba Road Series Rd 1
• 1st - Proper Northern Road Race Series Rd 1
• 1st - Scottish National Alba Road Series Rd 2
• 1st - Rutland-Melton International Cicle Classic
• 3rd - Lincoln Grand Prix

We caught up with Finn at the Lincoln GP to find out a little more about this charismatically proud Scotsman.

Hi Finn, please introduce yourself to our cycling audience.

Hi! My name is Finn Crockett and I’m from Strathpeffer, a small village in the North of Scotland. I’m 22 years old, and I’ve just finished my undergrad at the University of Stirling.

Who or what inspired you to take up cycling?

I’ve mountain biked from a young age and had a great cycling club, friends and local support so I was more of a social starter. It was the Strathpuffer 24hr mountain bike race that really caught my attention and pulled me towards general racing. Mountain biking then transitioned into road racing and now here we are!

You are one of the new faces for 2022, why Ribble Weldtite?

The support, the staff, and the infrastructure all really appealed. The team had, and has, a lot of opportunity and potential, so I was super happy to sign.

What are your aspirations for 2022?

Winning races is the obvious one but I really want to stay consistent throughout the year. We’ve got some big races later in the year where riders like myself are able to showcase their ability on a bigger stage; so to hopefully do that.

You’ve been in tremendous form so far this season, have your performances exceeded your expectations?

Thank you. I had a really good winter so I was hopeful for some good results but yes, I think so. I was quietly confident coming into this year but you never know how it is going to play out on race day.

Did you train specifically to peak at this point in the season?

Not particularly, but I had a nice lead up into these early season races so I knew the form was building. I have times throughout the year where I want to peak but it's difficult when you’ve got such a widespread calendar.

What’s been your best result so far?

Rutland for sure, that *pork pie sure tasted sweet.

What type of rider do you classify yourself as? Climber, puncheur, sprinter?

I’m a bit of an all-rounder, but I like a tough race where it usually comes down to a select group.

We’ve noticed that you’re sporting a few war wounds, how did you obtain those? 

Yes, I annoyingly had a bit of a wipeout at the first round of the tour series in Guisborough. The rain caught me out, and my front wheel was gone before I knew it. I’m thankfully recovering okay but was a sore one!
